Best Investments for Beginners Under 30 (Start Small)
Where a beginner under 30 can start investing with small amounts: the employer match, a Roth IRA, low-cost index funds and target-date funds, and what to avoid.

Starting young matters more than starting big. Money invested in your twenties has decades to compound, so even small monthly amounts can grow substantially โ though returns are never guaranteed and markets fall as well as rise. This is general education, not advice for your situation.
Before you invest
Build a small emergency fund first so a surprise bill does not force you to sell investments at a bad time, and pay off high-interest credit card debt โ clearing a balance charging over 20% is a better return than any investment can reliably offer.
1. The employer match
If your employer matches 401(k) contributions, contribute at least enough to get the full match. On a $50,000 salary, a match of 4% of pay is $2,000 a year added to your account.
2. A Roth IRA
You contribute taxed money and qualified withdrawals in retirement are tax-free, which suits people early in their careers. The 2026 limit is $7,500, subject to income limits, and you can open one at most large brokerages with no minimum.
3. Low-cost broad index funds
A total-market or S&P 500 index fund holds hundreds or thousands of companies at a very low annual fee, which removes the need to pick stocks. Warren Buffett has long recommended low-cost index funds for most investors.
4. Target-date funds
One fund that holds a mix of shares and bonds and becomes more conservative as its target year approaches. A simple choice if you would rather not manage an allocation yourself; check the fee.
What to avoid
Day trading, putting a large share of your money into a single stock or crypto asset, paying high fees, following investment tips from social media, and investing money you will need within about five years.
