A actuary's schedule
Most actuaries work full time and some work more than 40 hours a week. Finance and insurance employs 78% of actuaries, professional, scientific and technical services โ mostly consulting โ 13%, and corporate headquarters and government 3% each. They work in offices, on teams with accountants, underwriters and finance staff, and consultants may travel to clients (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
Overtime for actuaries
A salaried actuary is usually treated as an exempt professional: the test is a salary of at least $684 a week plus work requiring advanced knowledge in a field of science or learning acquired through prolonged specialized study (DOL Fact Sheet #17D). Trainees paid by the hour are owed overtime after 40 hours. Exam-passing bonuses, which the OOH says some employers pay, are excluded from BLS wages as non-production bonuses (BLS OEWS FAQ).
A actuary's salary per hour actually worked
Exam season adds study hours on top of work, and some actuaries work more than 40 hours a week. The table divides the BLS median and 75th percentile actuary salaries by weekly hours over 52 weeks. It doesn't count paid study time, which some employers give and others don't.
| Hours a week | Median salary per hour | 75th percentile per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 35 | $71.43 | $93.76 |
| 40 | $62.50 | $82.04 |

Training, licenses and pay
Actuaries typically need a bachelor's in math, actuarial science, statistics or another analytical field, and must pass a series of exams. Associate-level certification can take up to 7 years, and fellowship several more, in one of five tracks. Employers often pay for exams and study materials or give paid study time, and may give raises or bonuses for each exam passed; pension actuaries usually need enrollment with the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
