Nursing assistants, including CNAs, earned a median of $20.32 an hour in May 2025 โ $42,260 a year for full-time work โ according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which counted 1,448,910. Pay is bunched tightly: the bottom tenth earned under $16.32 and the top tenth over $24.99, only about half as much again, so state, employer, extra shifts and differentials are where the bigger differences are.

| Industry | Median annual wage |
|---|---|
| Government, excluding state and local education and hospitals | $47,050 |
| Nursing care facilities (skilled nursing facilities) | $43,000 |
| Hospitals; state, local, and private | $42,310 |

| Home healthcare services | $38,040 |
A CNA's schedule
Most nursing assistants work full time, though some work part time, and because nursing homes and hospitals provide care at all hours they may work nights, weekends and holidays (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Night and weekend differentials are excluded from BLS's wage figures, so add yours in the calculator.
Overtime for CNAs
Nursing assistants are non-exempt and owed time and a half for overtime. Hospitals and residential care facilities can use the 8-and-80 system by prior agreement โ overtime after 8 hours in a day and 80 in 14 days โ instead of after 40 in a week (DOL Fact Sheet #54). Like licensed practical nurses, CNAs don't qualify for the professional exemption that some salaried RNs fall under (DOL Fact Sheet #17N).
What a shift differential adds at the median
BLS's wage figures leave out shift differentials. The table adds a night or weekend differential to the median $20.32 an hour for 12 hours a week (one 12-hour shift) over 52 weeks. Differentials vary by employer and contract; these amounts are examples to show the arithmetic, not typical rates.
| Differential | Extra a year | Average hourly over 40 hours a week |
|---|---|---|
| $1.00/hour | $624 | $20.62 |
| $2.00/hour | $1,248 | $20.92 |
| $3.00/hour | $1,872 | $21.22 |
| $5.00/hour | $3,120 | $21.82 |
Training, licenses and pay
Nursing assistants usually complete a state-approved program of instruction and supervised clinical work, then pass a competency exam to use the state's title โ Certified Nursing Assistant in many states โ and join the state registry, which is required to work in a nursing home. Some states offer further credentials such as Certified Medication Assistant, which lets the holder give medications (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). BLS doesn't publish a CMA premium; the workplace table below shows the clearest official pay differences.
