How Much Do Movers Make? Pay, Tips and Independent Work

Company crews, app-based helpers and running your own moving service

By the Monthly Income Booster editorial team ยท Updated ยท How we research and fact-check

Moving work pays for physical effort, and it pays quickly. There are three quite different versions of it: employed crew work, app-based helper gigs, and running your own small moving service.

What BLS data shows (May 2025)

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025 national estimates) puts the median wage for laborers and freight, stock, and material movers, hand (SOC 53-7062) at $19.35 an hour, or $40,240 a year. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $15.03 an hour and the top 10% more than $26.51. Movers are classified with hand laborers and freight, stock and material movers. The line includes warehouse and loading work as well as moving crews, and excludes tips.

Crew Work Is Steady, Tips Add Up

Company crews get consistent hours and cash tips on good days, but the hourly rate is set by the employer.

App Helper Gigs Are Flexible

Marketplace platforms match you with people who need loading, unloading or a short haul. You choose your rate and hours; the platform takes a cut.

Your Own Service Earns Most

With a truck or van you can charge for the whole job. Insurance and licensing requirements are the trade-off โ€” check local rules carefully.

Peak Season Is Real

Month-end, summer and lease-turnover periods spike demand. Charging a premium in those windows is normal in the industry.

Protect Your Body and Your Liability

Straps, dollies, gloves and proper lifting technique prevent the injuries that end this hustle. Damage cover matters once you handle other people's belongings.
