How Much Do Personal Trainers Make? Real Take-Home

Gym splits, independent rates, online coaching, and what a full client roster actually pays

By the Monthly Income Booster editorial team ยท Updated ยท How we research and fact-check

A trainer's advertised session rate and their take-home are two very different numbers. Gym splits, unpaid floor hours, and gaps between clients decide which one you actually live on.

What BLS data shows (May 2025)

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025 national estimates) puts the median wage for exercise trainers and group fitness instructors (SOC 39-9031) at $22.67 an hour, or $47,160 a year. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $13.85 an hour and the top 10% more than $39.95. This line covers trainers on a gym's or studio's payroll. Independent trainers who run their own business are self-employed and are not in the survey.

Employed vs Renting Space vs Independent

Gym-employed trainers get clients but keep less per session. Renting space keeps more per session but you find every client. Independent and outdoor training keeps the most and is the hardest to fill.

The Schedule Ceiling

Clients want early mornings and evenings. That creates a split day with dead hours in the middle, and it is the reason trainers plateau at a certain number of sessions per week.

Online Coaching Removes the Ceiling

Programme design and check-ins are not one-to-one hours, so you can serve more clients per week than the calendar allows in person. Retention is harder, which is why most trainers run both.

Small Groups

Three or four clients in one session at a reduced individual rate raises your hourly substantially without adding hours. Most trainers add this far too late.

Certification and Insurance

A recognised certification and liability insurance are effectively mandatory to be hired or to rent space, and both are ongoing costs to build into your rate.
