How Much Do Photographers Charge? Session Pricing Explained

Why the shoot fee is only a third of the job, and how to build packages that survive the editing hours

By the Monthly Income Booster editorial team ยท Updated ยท How we research and fact-check

Photography pricing confuses beginners because the client sees a two-hour shoot and you deliver six hours of work. Everything about profitable pricing follows from making that visible in your numbers.

What BLS data shows (May 2025)

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025 national estimates) puts the median wage for photographers (SOC 27-4021) at $21.47 an hour, or $44,660 a year. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $14.82 an hour and the top 10% more than $44.14. Photographers employed by studios, newspapers and other businesses. BLS notes most photographers are self-employed, and those are not in these wage figures.

The Three Costs in Every Session

Your time shooting, your time editing, and the share of gear and software this shoot has to carry. Miss any one and the package quietly loses money.

How Genres Differ

Events pay per day with heavy editing loads, portraits are short with fast turnaround, product work is repeatable and often retained monthly, and weddings carry high stakes and high prices for a reason.

Packages Beat Hourly

Clients understand a package with a set number of edited images. It also protects you from scope creep, since extra edits become a priced add-on rather than a favour.

Usage and Licensing

Commercial clients reusing images in advertising are buying more than your time. Licensing terms are where experienced commercial photographers make most of their margin.

Set Your Floor First

The photography pricing tool gives the price below which a session costs you money. Build packages upward from that, never downward from a competitor's advertised price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I charge for a photo session?+

Start from shoot hours plus editing hours at your target rate, add travel and gear share, then add margin. That's your floor.

Why do photographers charge so much for weddings?+

Long days, second shooters, huge editing volumes, backup equipment, insurance, and no possibility of a reshoot if something fails.

Should I include raw files?+

Most photographers don't, because unedited files misrepresent their work. If a client insists, price it as a separate licence.
