On this topic
Business income is money a business earns from selling goods or services, after its costs. It has the highest ceiling of any income type and the widest range of outcomes: many small businesses do well, and many close within a few years. The difference is usually whether customers wanted the thing before it was built.
Models that are cheapest to start
Service businesses โ cleaning, bookkeeping, design, repairs, tutoring โ need little capital and pay from the first job. Product businesses such as e-commerce need money tied up in inventory and advertising before they earn. Software and subscription businesses take longest to build but can grow without adding hours. Starting with a service you can sell this month is the common low-risk route.
Validate before you build
The cheapest test is a real sale: a pre-order, a paid pilot, a first client at a stated price. The Small Business Administration's planning guide walks through market research and a simple business plan, and your city and state decide which licences and permits you need.
How business income is taxed
A sole proprietor or single-member LLC reports profit on Schedule C by default and pays income tax plus self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of net earnings. An LLC changes your legal liability, not your federal tax, unless you elect to be taxed as a corporation. An EIN is free from the IRS. Keeping business money in a separate account makes the return โ and any audit โ far easier.
What goes wrong
Building before anyone has paid; underpricing and running out of cash; mixing personal and business money; ignoring quarterly tax payments; and scaling a product that loses money on each sale. Know your profit per customer before you spend on growth.
