What actually pays on TikTok now

The original Creator Fund was widely reported by creators as paying very little per view, and TikTok replaced it with the Creativity Program, which pays materially better but only for videos over one minute that meet its eligibility rules. That change matters more than any posting tactic: the same account, posting the same subject at 35 seconds versus 75 seconds, is in two entirely different payout systems. If you are optimising for platform payouts, length is the first lever, not the last.

The revenue that actually adds up

Platform payouts are the smallest line for almost every account that earns real money on TikTok. Brand deals pay per post and scale with niche rather than raw follower count. TikTok Shop commission pays a percentage of products sold through your videos and is the fastest-growing route for accounts in beauty, home and fitness. Live gifts pay in the moment and reward consistency more than reach. And driving traffic off-platform — to an email list, a product, or a site — is the only one that keeps earning if the account is throttled or banned.

Why follower count is a bad target

TikTok distributes by video rather than by follower, which is why a 2,000-follower account can out-earn a 200,000-follower one in the same month. What advertisers actually buy is a specific audience and a reliable view floor. A small account in a niche with high commercial value — finance, software, home improvement — commands more per post than a large general entertainment account, because the brands that want that audience have more to spend per customer. The risk nobody prices in

Every TikTok income stream except the email list you build sits on a platform that can change its payout rules, throttle your reach, or remove the account with no appeal that works. That has happened to large accounts repeatedly. Treat TikTok as a distribution channel rather than as the business: it is extremely good at finding an audience cheaply and extremely bad as the only place that audience exists. The creators who survived each rule change are the ones who had somewhere else to send people.

Realistic expectations

The honest shape of this is a long flat period followed by a step change, not a gradual climb. Most accounts earn nothing for months, then one video finds an audience and the account's floor permanently moves. That makes it a poor choice if you need money this month and a reasonable one if you can post consistently for six months without a payout. Budget the time as an investment, not as work-for-hire, and check the hourly return honestly once something does land.
