Dog Walking Income Calculator: What Walkers Really Earn

Turn walks per day, rates, app commission and driving into real take-home pay

By the Monthly Income Booster editorial team · Updated · How we research and fact-check

Walks per month108
Gross booking income$2,382
Platform commission-$476
Take-home per month$1,865
Real hourly rate$26

Travel time between clients is unpaid, so tight routes matter more than higher rates.

Keep your budget and bills on track month to month in the free Bill Organizer app.

Dog walking looks like easy money until you count travel time and app commission. Enter your own walks, rate and driving costs and the calculator shows what actually lands in your account and what you earn per hour of real effort.

How the Dog Walking Calculator Works

Walks per month = walks per day × days per week × 4.33 (the average number of weeks in a month). Gross pay = walks per month × your rate per walk. Take-home = gross − platform commission − monthly driving cost. Real hourly rate = take-home ÷ (walks per month × (walk minutes + travel minutes) ÷ 60). Travel minutes are unpaid, which is why they matter as much as the rate.

Worked Examples: 5 Days a Week, 30-Minute Walks, $40 a Month Driving

These rows run the calculator's formula on example inputs, not survey data, so you can see which lever moves pay the most. Swap in your own local rate and your app's actual commission above.

Dog Walking Pay Rates: What to Charge per Walk for a Target Hourly Pay

Work backwards from the hourly pay you want. Rate per walk = target hourly pay × (walk minutes + travel minutes) ÷ 60 ÷ (1 − commission). The rows below run that formula; driving costs come on top, so add them in the calculator above. A 15-minute drive between walks raises the rate you need by half compared with no travel at all.

Rate per walk needed to take home $15, $20 or $25 an hour (before driving costs)

How to Set Your Dog Walking Pay Rate

1) Look up what three or four walkers near you charge for a 30-minute walk on the booking apps and local listings. 2) Decide the real hourly pay you need and divide it by the walks you can fit in an hour including travel — that is your floor per walk. 3) Price a 60-minute walk, an extra dog from the same home and holiday or weekend walks as separate line items. 4) If you book through an app, raise the listed rate to cover its commission, which you can read in its sitter terms. For official wage data on pet-care work, see the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational wage tables for animal caretakers (SOC 39-2021).

Rates Vary by Route, Not by City

Two walkers charging the same rate can earn very different hourly pay. The one with four dogs on one street beats the one driving fifteen minutes between each booking.

Commission Is the Biggest Line Item

Booking apps take a share of every walk. Repeat clients booked directly (where platform terms allow) change the maths more than a rate rise does.

Group Walks Change Everything

Where local rules and client agreements allow, walking compatible dogs together multiplies income for the same hour of work.

Costs People Forget

Fuel, parking, poop bags, insurance and phone data all come out of that per-walk rate. Put them in the calculator so your hourly figure is honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do dog walkers make?+

It depends on rate, walks per day and how much unpaid travel sits between bookings. Enter your own numbers above for a realistic hourly figure rather than a national average.

How do you calculate dog walking pay?+

Multiply walks per day by days per week by 4.33 to get walks per month, multiply by your rate per walk, then subtract the app's commission and your driving costs. Divide by the hours spent walking and travelling for your real hourly rate.

How should I set my dog walking pay rates?+

Start from local walkers' prices for a 30-minute walk, check that your rate clears your target hourly pay once travel time is counted, and charge separately for 60-minute walks, extra dogs and holidays. Add the app commission on top if you book through one.

What should I charge per dog walk to make $20 an hour?+

For a 30-minute walk with 15 minutes of travel booked through an app taking 20%, you need $18.75 a walk: $20 × 45 ÷ 60 ÷ 0.8. Booked directly with no commission it is $15.00, and with only 5 minutes between walks on an app it is $14.58. Driving costs come on top.

How much does travel time between walks cost a dog walker?+

At $20 a walk with a 20% app commission, each walk pays $16. With 5 minutes of travel that is about $27 an hour for a 30-minute walk; with 15 minutes of travel it falls to about $21 an hour, before fuel. Clustering clients on one route is the cheapest pay rise.

Is dog walking worth it as a side hustle?+

It works best with clustered clients and repeat weekday bookings. Scattered one-off walks rarely clear a good hourly rate once driving is counted.

Do dog walkers need insurance?+

Most professional walkers carry liability cover, and many platforms require it. Treat it as a fixed monthly cost in your numbers.
