How Much Do Transcriptionists Make? Per-Audio-Minute Pay

The ratio of working time to audio time, what raises your rate, and whether it's worth starting now

By the Monthly Income Booster editorial team · Updated · How we research and fact-check

Transcription is paid per audio minute, so your income depends on your working-time-to-audio ratio. A beginner might spend five minutes of work per minute of audio; an experienced transcriptionist with good software spends far less.

What BLS data shows (May 2025)

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025 national estimates) puts the median wage for medical transcriptionists (SOC 31-9094) at $19.43 an hour, or $40,410 a year. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $13.58 an hour and the top 10% more than $26.90. Medical transcriptionists is the only transcription line BLS publishes; general, legal and podcast transcription are not broken out, and per-audio-minute freelance work is not surveyed.

The Ratio Is Everything

Clear single-speaker audio transcribes quickly. Multiple speakers, accents, crosstalk, and poor recordings can triple the time for the same pay, which is why experienced people refuse bad audio.

General vs Specialist Work

Legal, medical, and technical transcription pay considerably more because they need vocabulary and accuracy that general work doesn't. That's where the career progression is.

AI Changed the Job

Machine transcription produces the first draft now. Paid work has shifted towards editing and verifying those drafts, which is faster per file and priced accordingly — a different job with a different rate.

Tools That Pay for Themselves

A foot pedal, good headphones, and text expansion software cut your ratio directly, and the ratio is your wage.

Realistic Expectations

It's flexible, genuinely no-experience work you can do at odd hours. It is not high-paying at entry level, and it rewards specialising quickly.
