How Much Do Tutors Make? Rates and Yearly Pay

What drives tutoring rates, how many students you can hold part-time, and why the yearly figure is lower than you'd guess

By the Monthly Income Booster editorial team · Updated · How we research and fact-check

Tutoring pays a strong hourly rate for work you can do from a kitchen table, but the yearly total is capped by term time and how many evening slots exist in a week.

What BLS data shows (May 2025)

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025 national estimates) puts the median wage for tutors (SOC 25-3041) at $20.84 an hour, or $43,350 a year. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $14.15 an hour and the top 10% more than $36.53. Tutors employed by tutoring companies, schools and learning centers. Private tutors who set their own rates are self-employed and not in the survey.

What Moves Your Rate

Exam-level and university subjects pay far more than primary support. Scarcity matters too — sciences, higher maths, and admissions test prep have fewer capable tutors.

The Slot Problem

Almost every student wants after school or weekends. That is roughly fifteen good slots a week, which is your real ceiling regardless of demand.

Platforms vs Independent

Platforms fill your calendar quickly but take a cut. Independent tutors earn more per hour once referrals start, which usually takes a term or two.

Group Sessions Break the Ceiling

Two or three students in one session at a reduced individual rate multiplies your hourly without adding hours. This is how experienced tutors raise income without more evenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I make tutoring part-time?+

It's your rate multiplied by realistic weekly slots and working weeks. Enter your own numbers in the tutoring tool rather than annualising a good week.

What subjects pay the most?+

Higher-level maths and sciences, test preparation, and university-level subjects, because fewer tutors can teach them well.

Do I need teaching qualifications?+

Not usually for private tutoring, though schools and some platforms require them. Demonstrated subject mastery and results matter most to parents.
