On this topic
Proofreading pay is a speed business: rates are usually per word or per page, so your effective hourly depends entirely on how many words you can accurately clear in an hour.
What BLS data shows (May 2025)
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025 national estimates) puts the median wage for proofreaders and copy markers (SOC 43-9081) at $24.58 an hour, or $51,120 a year. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $16.59 an hour and the top 10% more than $38.12. Proofreaders and copy markers is a small line (a few thousand employees). Freelance proofreaders are self-employed and not included.
| Percentile | Hourly | Annual |
|---|---|---|
| 10th (lowest-paid 10% earn less) | $16.59 | $34,510 |
| Median | $24.58 | $51,120 |
| 90th (top 10% earn more) | $38.12 | $79,290 |

| Business expenses per year | $6,000 |

| = Billable hours per year | 1,150 |
| = Revenue you must bill | $79,029 |
| = Minimum hourly rate | $68.72 |
How Proofreaders Charge
Per word is the standard for publishing and academic work, per page appears in legal and manuscript work, and hourly is used when material is messy or the scope is unclear.
Speed Sets Your Hourly
Clean copy moves fast; poorly written or technical material crawls. Always sample a few pages before quoting per word, or you'll accidentally work for a fraction of your rate.
Proofreading vs Copy Editing
Proofreading is the last pass for errors. Copy editing reshapes sentences and fixes consistency, takes far longer, and should be priced much higher. Clients frequently ask for one and want the other.
Finding Clients
Self-publishing authors, agencies, academic clients, and small businesses producing regular content. Repeat clients matter more here than in most freelance work because each one gets faster over time.
Working Out What to Charge
Decide your target hourly, measure your realistic words per hour, and divide. The freelance rate tool does this and adds unbillable time and expenses.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do proofreaders charge per word?+
Rates vary by material type and turnaround. Sample the text, time yourself, and set a per-word rate that hits your target hourly on that specific kind of copy.
Do I need a qualification to proofread?+
No formal licence is required, though a recognised course helps you win work and price higher. A strong test edit persuades most clients faster than a certificate.
Is proofreading still in demand with AI tools?+
Automated tools catch obvious errors but miss meaning, consistency, and house style. Demand has shifted towards final human checks on machine-assisted drafts.
