On this topic
Virtual assistants do everything from inbox management to bookkeeping to podcast editing. The narrower your niche, the higher your rate.
Highest-Paying VA Niches
Real estate VA ($25–$50/hr), executive assistant to founders ($40–$75/hr), podcast production ($30–$60/hr), Pinterest management for ecom brands ($25–$50/hr).
Where to Find Clients
Belay, Time Etc., 99 Dollar Social, Boldly (platforms), or direct outreach to entrepreneurs on LinkedIn/Twitter who post about being overwhelmed.
Scaling to an Agency
Once you're booked, subcontract overflow at $15/hr while charging $40/hr. Most 6-figure VAs eventually run small agencies.
What the work actually is
Virtual assistance covers inbox and calendar management, travel booking, invoicing and light bookkeeping, customer support, research, data entry, social scheduling, and the general category of "things the business owner should not be doing themselves". The label is broad enough to be nearly meaningless, which is both the problem and the opportunity: a generalist VA competes with everyone on price, while a VA who does one specific thing — podcast production, Shopify order support, real estate transaction coordination — competes with almost nobody.
How the rate actually moves
Three things raise a VA rate and none of them is experience in the abstract. Specialising in an industry, because industry knowledge removes the training cost. Owning an outcome rather than a task list — "inbox stays under ten" rather than "four hours of email a week". And moving from hourly to a monthly retainer, which prices the reliability rather than the minutes and is what every VA earning well has eventually done. Generalist hourly work is the floor of this market, and staying there is a pricing decision rather than a skill ceiling.
Where the first clients come from
Almost never from a cold marketplace profile with no reviews. The reliable routes are: people who already know you professionally, the communities where your target clients already talk to each other, and agencies that place VAs and handle the sales for a cut. The agency route pays less per hour and is by far the fastest way to get the first three months of work and testimonials, which is what unlocks everything else. Treat it as paid customer acquisition rather than as a permanent arrangement.
The numbers to run before you commit
This is self-employment income, so 15.3% self-employment tax applies on top of income tax, and there is no paid time off. A VA charging $30 an hour for 20 billable hours a week is grossing about $31,200 a year — but billable hours are not working hours, and most VAs bill 60-70% of the time they work. Run your quoted rate through a freelance rate calculator before you agree to it, because the employed equivalent of $30 an hour self-employed is considerably less than $30.
What goes wrong
Scope creep, almost universally. A retainer agreed as inbox management becomes inbox management plus scheduling plus a newsletter plus a spreadsheet nobody mentioned, at the same price. The fix is a written scope with a named list of included tasks and a stated rate for anything outside it, agreed before the first invoice. The second failure is a single client representing most of your income, which is not a side hustle at that point but an unprotected job — three clients at a third each is a materially safer position than one at 100%.
Once your skills specialise, VA work overlaps with better-paid remote roles; 15 remote jobs that pay $50+ an hour lists them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a virtual assistant do?+
Inbox and calendar management, scheduling, travel booking, invoicing, customer support, research, data entry and social media scheduling — broadly, the administrative work a business owner should not be doing personally. Specialists also do industry-specific work like podcast production or transaction coordination.
How much do virtual assistants charge?+
Generalist hourly work sits at the bottom of the market and specialists on monthly retainers sit at the top. The three things that move a rate are industry specialisation, owning an outcome rather than a task list, and switching from hourly billing to a retainer. Price it through a freelance rate calculator rather than by copying a marketplace average.
Do I need a certification to be a virtual assistant?+
No. Clients hire on demonstrated competence and reliability, not credentials. A short course can help you learn a specific tool a client needs, but no certification is required and none of the paid "VA certification" programmes is a prerequisite for work.
How do virtual assistants find their first clients?+
Through people who already know them professionally, through the communities where target clients gather, or through an agency that handles sales for a cut of the rate. The agency route pays less but produces the first months of work and the testimonials that everything else depends on.
