Every state, sorted from the highest average bill. The bill is what the average residential customer paid per month; it reflects both how much electricity homes use and what it costs, so a state can have a low price and still a high bill (or the reverse).

- Montana: $107.91 (852 kWh at 12.66¢)
Why your bill differs from the average
- Climate and heating type. Homes in hot states run air conditioning for months; homes that heat with electricity use far more in winter than homes on gas. That's why southern states lead on usage.
- Home size and people. A large house, a pool pump or an electric vehicle can double usage. Your bill shows your kWh; compare it with your state's average above.
- Rates and fixed charges. The price per kWh here is the average of everything paid divided by energy used, so it includes fixed monthly charges. Your utility's tariff may be tiered or time-of-use.
- Season. These are yearly averages. Summer and winter bills can be well above them, so budget with a year of your own bills if you have them, or use the utility bill estimator.
Natural gas, water, trash and internet
The gas column is the average price EIA reports for gas delivered to homes, in dollars per thousand cubic feet (Mcf). One Mcf is roughly 10.4 therms, the unit many gas bills use, so divide by about 10.4 for a per-therm price. How much you use depends mostly on whether gas heats your home and water.
We don't publish state averages for water, sewer, trash or internet: there's no single national source that measures them the same way in every state, and a made-up number wouldn't help your budget. Use your own last few bills, or the estimator with your local rates.
Budgeting for utilities
- Add up the last 12 months of each utility and divide by 12. That's the amount to budget every month.
- Ask your utility about budget billing (level payments), which spreads seasonal highs across the year.
- Track each one with its due date so a big winter or summer bill doesn't catch you out: the bill tracker or the phone app will remind you.
