How this calculator works
Paid every two weeks you get 26 paychecks a year, not 24, so two months (sometimes three) bring a third check. Paid weekly you get 52 or 53, so four or five months bring a fifth. Enter any payday you know and the calculator steps forward and back 14 (or 7) days at a time to list every payday in the year you pick.
- Biweekly paydays are exactly 14 days apart, so every payday in any year can be found by stepping forward or back 14 days from one you know (7 days if you're paid weekly).
- A month with three biweekly paydays (or five weekly ones) is an extra-paycheck month. Paychecks beyond two a month = paychecks in the year − 24 (beyond four a month = paychecks − 48 for weekly pay).
- Extra take-home = take-home per paycheck × those extra paychecks.
Worked example
With these inputs: month 1; day 9; year 2026; how often you're paid Every 2 weeks; year to check 2026; take-home pay per paycheck $1,500.
The result is 3-paycheck months in 2026 May and October, with paychecks in 2026 26 and paychecks beyond 2 a month 2. Budget your monthly bills on 2 paychecks a month. Then the extra check in May and October is free money: an emergency fund, a debt payment or next year's annual bills.
3 paycheck months in 2026 and 2027
Which months get a third paycheck depends on your payday, not just the year, because biweekly schedules start on different Fridays. With a payday on January 9, 2026, the extra paychecks land in May and October 2026 (May 1, 15 and 29; October 2, 16 and 30), and in April and October 2027. On the other Friday schedule (a payday on January 2, 2026) they land in January and July 2026, so enter your own date.
Some years hold 27 biweekly paydays instead of 26. A year is 365 days, one day more than 26 two-week steps, so it happens when the first payday of the year falls on January 1 (January 1 or 2 in a leap year). That is the case in 2027 for the January 2, 2026 schedule: 27 paydays, with three in January, July and December. The calculator counts the real dates, so you'll see 27 in the "Paychecks in" line when it happens.
Budget on two paychecks, keep the third
The easiest way to use the extra checks is to plan your monthly bills as if you only ever get two. Rent, utilities and loan payments are paid from those two, and the third paycheck in an extra month is left over in full. Put it toward an emergency fund, an extra debt payment, or the yearly bills that arrive once a year, like car registration or insurance.
If you're paid twice a month (on the 1st and 15th, say) you get 24 paychecks and never a third one. The same goes for monthly pay. This calculator is for biweekly and weekly schedules.
Line up bills with paydays
Knowing every payday also tells you which bills each paycheck has to cover. Big bills that fall in the same two weeks can strain one paycheck while the next one has room to spare. The bill due date planner and the paycheck budget calculator help you spread them out, and many billers will move a due date if you ask.

Frequently asked questions
What are the 3 paycheck months in 2026?
It depends on your payday. For a biweekly Friday payday on January 9, 2026, they're May and October. For other dates, enter any payday you've had and the calculator lists your months.
What are the 3 paycheck months in 2027?
Continuing the January 9, 2026 schedule, the 2027 extra-paycheck months are April and October. Change the "Year to check" to 2027 with your own payday to see yours.
How many 3 paycheck months are in a year?
Usually two, because 26 biweekly paychecks is two more than two a month. In a year with 27 paydays there are three.
How many paychecks do I get a year if I'm paid biweekly?
26 in most years and 27 in some. Paid weekly it's 52, or 53 in some years; paid twice a month it's always 24.
What should I do with a third paycheck?
If your bills are already covered by the first two, the third is free to save or pay down debt. The emergency fund and debt payoff calculators show what it does for you.
