Paycheck Budget Calculator

Bills come monthly, but paychecks often come every week or every two weeks. This calculator turns your total monthly bills into the amount to set aside from each paycheck.

Choose your pay frequency, enter take-home pay per paycheck and your total monthly bills. You'll see the set-aside amount, its share of each paycheck, and what's left.

How this calculator works

Converts monthly bills into a per-paycheck amount (weekly ×12÷52, biweekly ×12÷26) so the bill money can be set aside the day you are paid, before anything else gets spent.

  • Paychecks per year: weekly 52, every 2 weeks 26, twice a month 24, monthly 12.
  • Set aside per paycheck = monthly bills × 12 ÷ paychecks per year.
  • Monthly income = pay per paycheck × paychecks per year ÷ 12.

Worked example

With these inputs: pay frequency Every 2 weeks; take-home per paycheck $1,900; total monthly bills $2,600.

The result is set aside per paycheck $1,200.00, with share of each paycheck 63.2% and left per paycheck $700.00. Move $1,200.00 to a bills account every payday and the rest is genuinely yours.

Why not just divide by 2 or 4?

Biweekly pay means 26 paychecks a year, not 24. Most months have two, but two months have three. Dividing monthly bills by 2 overstates what each paycheck needs to cover, and ×12 ÷ 26 gets it right. For weekly pay, ×12 ÷ 52 is correct; dividing by 4 comes up short.

Those "extra" third paychecks are a good time to build savings or make an extra debt payment.

The bills-account method

Open a separate checking account just for bills. On every payday, move the set-aside amount into it and pay every bill from there. Whatever stays in your main account is yours to spend, with no mental arithmetic.

To know which bills fall in which pay period, put them on a bill calendar. The free web tracker on this site has a monthly calendar view.

Frequently asked questions

How do I budget biweekly pay?

Multiply your monthly bills by 12 and divide by 26 to get the amount to hold back from each paycheck. Pay bills from that pool and spend the remainder.

What do I do with the third paycheck in a month?

Because your budget already covers every bill from two paychecks, the third can go to savings, an emergency fund or extra debt payments.

How much of my paycheck should go to bills?

There's no single rule, but if fixed bills take more than about 60% of take-home pay, there's little room left for food, savings and surprises. The 50/30/20 calculator is a useful benchmark.

Is "twice a month" the same as biweekly?

No. Twice a month (semimonthly) is 24 paychecks a year, on fixed dates like the 1st and 15th. Biweekly is every 14 days, so 26 a year.
