Holiday Budget Calculator

The holidays are the one big expense everyone knows is coming — and the one that most often ends up on a credit card in January. Planning it per paycheck fixes that.

Enter how many people are on your gift list, the average you'll spend per gift, the extras (food, decorations, travel, cards), and how many paychecks you have before you shop. You'll get the holiday total and the amount to set aside from each paycheck.

How this calculator works

Adds the gift list to the extras people forget, then spreads what is left over the paychecks you have — so the holidays come out of pay you have not spent yet instead of a card balance in January.

  • Gifts = people on the list × average per gift.
  • Holiday total = gifts + extras.
  • Per paycheck = (holiday total − already set aside) ÷ paychecks before you shop.

Worked example

With these inputs: people on the gift list 8; average per gift $40; food, decorations, travel, cards $250; paychecks before you shop 6; already set aside $0.

The result is set aside per paycheck $95.00, with holiday total $570.00 and gifts $320.00.

The extras that break holiday budgets

Gifts are the line everyone plans. The overspend usually comes from everything else: the big family dinner, travel to see relatives, wrapping paper and cards, decorations, teacher and neighbour gifts, holiday outfits, and the extra takeout of a busy December. Put a real figure in the extras field, even a rough one.

Write the list down with a number next to each name. An average per gift is fine for planning, but a list keeps the kids' presents from quietly doubling while the rest stay the same.

Start early and pay from money you already have

Starting in September or October spreads the cost over six or more paychecks instead of two. Set the per-paycheck amount up as a recurring bill into a separate savings account, then shop from that balance. Black Friday deals only save money if the money was already set aside for them.

If you do use a card for rewards or purchase protection, pay it off from the holiday fund when the statement arrives. A $570 holiday paid over a year at card APRs can easily add $70 or more in interest.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget for Christmas?

Add up gifts and extras and compare the total with what you can set aside before you shop. In the example — eight people at $40 each plus $250 in extras — the holiday costs $570, or $95 from each of six paychecks.

How much should I spend per gift?

Set an average that fits the total you can afford, then adjust by person. The calculator uses the average for planning; your list decides who gets more or less.

When should I start saving for the holidays?

As early as possible: the more paychecks you spread it over, the smaller each set-aside. Starting in January makes it a small monthly bill; starting in October still gives most people six paychecks.

What should I include in holiday extras?

Food and hosting, travel, decorations, wrapping, cards and postage, tips and small gifts for teachers or service workers, and events. Anything you'll only buy because it's the holidays belongs here.

What if I've already saved some of it?

Enter it in "Already set aside"; the calculator only spreads what's left. If you've covered it all, anything more is a head start on next year.
