How to Budget Bills When You're Paid Biweekly

By Dixon App Studio · Updated

To budget bills on biweekly pay, multiply your monthly bills by 12 and divide by 26, and move that amount into a bills account every payday. Pay every bill from that account. Because there are 26 biweekly paychecks a year rather than 24, this sets aside exactly enough without the over-saving that "half the bills from each check" causes, and it leaves two paychecks a year completely free.

Why "half per paycheck" is wrong for biweekly pay

Twice-monthly pay (1st and 15th) gives 24 checks a year, so half the bills per check is right. Biweekly pay gives 26. If your bills are $2,400 a month, half per check is $1,200, or $31,200 a year set aside for $28,800 of bills. The ×12 ÷ 26 rule sets aside $2,400 × 12 ÷ 26 = $1,107.69 per check, exactly $28,800 a year.

Build the budget in five steps

  1. Total your monthly bills. Include yearly bills divided by 12 (the yearly expenses calculator converts them). Use the list of monthly bills so nothing is missed.
  2. Work out the set-aside: monthly bills × 12 ÷ 26. The paycheck budget calculator does it and shows what's left of each check.
  3. Open a bills account (a second checking account) and move the set-aside there every payday, ideally by split direct deposit.
  4. Seed it with one extra set-aside, so a bill due the day before payday never overdraws it. The checking buffer calculator sizes the cushion.
  5. Pay every bill from it, by autopay or with reminders. What's in your main account is free to spend.

Worked example

Take-home pay $1,850 every other Friday; monthly bills $2,102.93; a $600 car registration once a year.

  • Bills including the registration: $2,102.93 + $600 ÷ 12 = $2,152.93 a month.
  • Set-aside per check: $2,152.93 × 12 ÷ 26 = $993.66.
  • Left from each check: $1,850 − $993.66 = $856.34 for food, fuel, spending and savings.
  • Monthly income averages $1,850 × 26 ÷ 12 = $4,008.33, so bills take 54% of it.

The two three-paycheck months

In two months a year a third Friday paycheck arrives. Your bills account still gets its set-aside (that's how it stays level across the year), but the bills in that month are already covered, so the balance grows. Use the extra for one big goal each time: an extra debt payment, the emergency fund, or next year's insurance premium. The 3-paycheck months calculator lists them for your pay dates.

Common snags

  • A bill bigger than one set-aside lands early in the month. That's what the seed balance is for. Without one, move the due date (see how).
  • Bills that vary, like electricity and gas: budget the yearly average, and let the bills account absorb summer and winter peaks.
  • Irregular hours: budget on your lowest regular paycheck and treat the rest as extra.

The Bill Organizer app shows bills grouped by the paycheck that covers them, and the bills-by-paycheck printable does the same on paper.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much to save for bills each paycheck?

Monthly bills × 12 ÷ number of paychecks a year: 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 twice-monthly. For $2,000 of bills on biweekly pay that's $923.08 per check.

Is biweekly the same as twice a month?

No. Biweekly is every two weeks, 26 paychecks a year, on the same weekday. Twice a month (semimonthly) is two set dates such as the 1st and 15th, 24 paychecks a year.

Which months have three biweekly paychecks?

It depends on your first payday of the year. Two months a year have three (occasionally three months, in a year with 27 paydays). The 3-paycheck months calculator lists them from any known payday.

Do I need a separate bank account for bills?

It isn't required, but it makes the method work: the bills money is out of sight, autopays always have funds, and the balance in your main account is what you can actually spend.
