Weekly Bill Tracker: How to Plan Bills Week by Week
By Dixon App Studio · Updated
A weekly bill tracker lists every bill under the week it's due (days 1-7, 8-14, 15-21, 22-28 and 29-31), shows which paycheck covers it, and sets aside a weekly share of any bill too big for one check. Each payday you look at one row: what's due before the next payday, and whether the money is there. It suits anyone paid weekly, gig and hourly workers whose income changes week to week, and anyone who wants a tighter grip than a monthly list gives.
The columns you need
- Week: five rows per month, by day of the month, so the same bill lands in the same week every month.
- Bill and due date.
- Amount: the usual amount, updated when the real bill arrives.
- Paid from: this week's pay, or a set-aside you've been building.
- Paid: the date and a tick.
Paper, a spreadsheet or an app all work. The printable bill tracker and the bill tracker template both have a due-date column you can group by week.
Worked example: $720 a week
Take-home pay is $720 every Friday. Rent is $1,200, due on the 1st. That's more than one check, so rent gets a weekly set-aside: $1,200 × 12 months ÷ 52 weeks = $276.92 a week, moved to a separate account each payday. The other bills are paid from the week they fall in:
| Week | Bills due | Paid from this week's pay | Rent set-aside | Left for everything else |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 (days 1-7) | Rent $1,200 (1st, from the rent set-aside), phone $55 (3rd) | $55 | $276.92 | $388.08 |
| Week 2 (days 8-14) | Car payment $310 (10th), internet $60 (12th) | $370 | $276.92 | $73.08 |
| Week 3 (days 15-21) | Electric $95 (16th), car insurance $128 (20th) | $223 | $276.92 | $220.08 |
| Week 4 (days 22-28) | Credit card $150 (23rd), streaming $18 (25th), gym $30 (27th) | $198 | $276.92 | $245.08 |
| Week 5 (days 29-31) | Water $45 (30th) | $45 | $276.92 | $398.08 |
Every week works, but week 2 leaves only $73.08 for food, gas and everything else, because the car payment and internet both land in it. Week 5 only exists in months with a 29th to 31st day and only gets a fifth paycheck in some months: with 52 Fridays a year, usually four months have five paydays.
Smooth it: one weekly amount for all bills
The fix for an uneven week is to set aside the same amount every week for all bills, not just rent. The bills other than rent total $891 a month: $891 × 12 ÷ 52 = $205.62 a week. Add the rent share and the weekly set-aside is $2,091 × 12 ÷ 52 = $482.54. Move that into a bills account every payday and pay every bill from it, and you have $237.46 left every week, whichever bills are due.
Because 52 weekly set-asides cover exactly 12 months of bills, the bills account builds a small cushion in five-payday months and uses it in four-payday months. Start a few weeks ahead if you can, so the first rent payment isn't short. The paycheck budget calculator works out the per-paycheck amount for weekly, biweekly or twice-a-month pay.
The five-minute payday review
- Move the weekly set-aside (or the rent share) to the bills account.
- Read this week's row: is every bill due before next Friday paid or scheduled?
- Read next week's row: is anything bigger than usual, such as a quarterly bill or an annual renewal?
- Tick what you paid and write down anything that changed.
The bill payment checklist covers what to check before you pay and what to record afterwards.
Weekly, biweekly or monthly tracking?
Match the tracker to your pay. Paid weekly: track by week as above. Paid every two weeks: group bills by paycheck instead and watch for the two months a year with a third check (how to budget bills on biweekly pay). Paid twice a month or monthly: a monthly list with a paycheck column is enough (how to split your paycheck for bills). Irregular income: use the weekly tracker, and set aside the weekly bills amount first in the weeks you earn more.
Keep the dates in front of you
A weekly tracker only helps if you look at it every week. Put a recurring reminder on payday, or let a tracker remind you per bill: the free online bill tracker shows what's due this week and what's left this month, and the bill calendar shows the month at a glance, so the weeks with clusters of bills stand out.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a weekly bill tracker?
Make five rows per month (days 1-7, 8-14, 15-21, 22-28 and 29-31), list each bill in the week it's due with its amount and the paycheck that pays it, and add a paid column. Review the current and next week every payday.
How do I pay rent from a weekly paycheck?
Set aside a weekly share: monthly rent × 12 ÷ 52. For $1,200 rent that's $276.92 a week, moved to a separate account every payday so the full amount is there on the 1st.
How much should I set aside each week for bills?
Add up all monthly bills, multiply by 12 and divide by 52. In the example on this page, $2,091 of monthly bills means $482.54 a week, leaving $237.46 of a $720 paycheck for everything else.
How many months have five paydays if I'm paid weekly?
With 52 weekly paydays a year, usually four months have five paydays and the other eight have four. Some years have 53 paydays, which adds a fifth month.
