Holiday credit card balances
December's gifts, travel and food usually show up on January's statement. If the balance isn't paid in full, interest starts: at 22% APR, a $1,500 balance costs about $27 in the first month alone, and paying only the minimum can stretch it over years.
Plan it before you spend: set a holiday budget with the holiday budget calculator. Already carrying a balance? The credit card payoff calculator shows how long it takes at different payments, and the balance transfer calculator shows whether a 0% offer would save money after the fee.
Annual renewals and memberships
Anything bought or started in January renews in January: warehouse club memberships, Amazon Prime if you signed up then ($139 a year in the US), antivirus and software licences, cloud storage, domain names, streaming plans paid yearly, roadside assistance, professional dues. Gym annual fees often bill early in the year too.
Go through last January's statements and list every yearly charge with its amount. Cancel the ones you no longer use before they renew (how: find and cancel subscriptions), and add the rest to a subscription tracker with the renewal date so it never surprises you again.
Property tax
Property tax schedules depend on your county, and several states have a payment in or around January. In Texas, property taxes become delinquent if not paid before February 1, so most owners pay in January. California's second installment is due February 1 (delinquent after April 10). Check your county tax office's site for your exact dates.
If your mortgage has an escrow account, the lender pays it for you, but January is also when many escrow analyses arrive: a higher tax bill can raise your monthly payment or produce a shortage notice. If you pay property tax yourself, it belongs in a sinking fund: yearly amount ÷ 12 each month. The sinking fund calculator works out the monthly figure for any due date.
Estimated tax (self-employed and 1099 income)
The fourth quarterly estimated tax payment for tax year 2026 is due January 15, 2027. If you have freelance, gig, rental or investment income without withholding, this payment covers September to December. The quarterly estimated tax calculator shows the amount and the 1099 tax calculator shows what percentage of each payment to set aside.
Employees get W-2s by the end of January. If last year's refund was large or you owed, run the W-4 calculator so 2027's paychecks withhold the right amount.
Health costs reset on January 1
Most health plans restart the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum on January 1, so the same prescription or visit can cost more in January than it did in December. Premiums for the new plan year start too, and some employers change payroll deductions on the first paycheck of the year.
Budget a little extra for health in the first quarter, and check your first January pay stub: if take-home pay changed, update the income line of your budget.
Heating and utility bills
In colder states, the January electric or gas bill is often the highest of the year, covering December's usage. Ask your utility about budget billing (the same amount every month based on your yearly average) if winter bills are a strain, and see average utility bills for typical costs and how to lower utility bills for what actually cuts them.
A January bill plan in four steps
- Pull last January's statements and list every charge that isn't monthly.
- Add this year's extras: the holiday card balance, property tax if you pay it directly, the January 15 estimated payment if you're self-employed.
- Total it and compare with one month of take-home pay. The gap is what to save in November and December, or to spread with a sinking fund next year. The yearly bills guide covers the rest of the year's irregular bills.
- Put every due date in one place with a reminder a few days ahead: a bill calendar, the online bill tracker or the Bill app. If two big ones land together, see which bills to pay first.
